AAFR has launched a chapter in Cape Town, South Africa!
AAFR founder and curator Ashara Ekundayo has been named the inaugural Curatorial Research Fellow at the Muholi Art Institute in Cape Town, South Africa, and will be traveling there over the next 18 months delving into the archives of award-winning, humanitarian and visual arts activist, Zanele Muholi. She will also continue writing BLATANT - an art book which features more than 35 interviews with Black womxn artists across genre and geography.
Brazil
AAFR opens our chapter in Salvador, Brazil beginning by sponsoring the inaugural “Odù” international film festival presented by Black Freedom Fellowship and curated by AAFR Curatorial Assistant Isha Rosemond.
Odù is an immersive film festival that centers the sonic and visual stories of Black and Indigenous artists and activists. Created by the Black Freedom Fellowship and made in collaboration with local artists and movement workers, this grassroots festival includes film screenings, artist talks, community workshops and musical performances.
Artist As First First Responder has expanded its mission beyond borders in 2023 including projects in South Africa and Brazil.
