Ashara & Sir Zanele Muholi at MoMA for the Just Above Midtown exhibition
Greetings from New York on All Saints Day!
I am still on a high from the Loophole of Retreat gathering that took place at the 159th Venice Bienale. While in Italy, I centered and celebrated the collective work of Black womxn creative laborers and witnessed Simone Yvette Leigh’s glorious offering to the world along with over 700 Black womxn feminists.
I am also on the final week of my residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts and decided to take a special trip to New York to view the work of Adebunmi Gbadebo’s who is a featured artist in the exhibition I curated, SALT to CATCH GHOSTS, and whose work currently on view at the The Met for the exhibition “Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina”.
I’m enjoying this time in New York where I get to celebrate my friend Sir Zanele Muholi who is in the US again and receiving an award from the International Center of Photography. Museums are my happy place and one of the ways in which I am able to take time for myself to be inspired by the imaginings and work of so many others.
That being said, I want to invite you to see the exhibitions that are currently on view in Santa Rosa and San Francisco especially if you haven’t yet already! Plus, I’m really looking forward to co-hosting our closing reception/end-of-year Soirée for SALT to CATCH GHOSTS and Black [Space] Residency! Please STD for December 10th, 5p at/(slash)! There are so many things to look forward to and reflect on, but for now I am wishing all of you deep presence and gratitude.
