FRONTLINE PROPHET: JAMES BALDWIN OPENS IN DETROIT
|

Frontline Prophet: James Baldwin has officially arrived to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American in Detroit. Frontline Prophet: James Baldwin, is a traveling exhibition that features the artwork of Detroit-based creative Sabrina Nelson. In honor and celebration of his centennial birthday, Nelson provides an intimate, multi-sensory experience of James Baldwin and his legacy. The exhibition consists of unique works birthed from Nelson’s meditation on James Baldwin, and a 91-day commitment to draw his essence from her memory. With a deeply personal perspective on the iconic writer, she presents a seven-year sketchbook study, vivid works on paper and canvas, projected video, installations, collaborations with contemporary writers and thinkers, and augmented reality experiences.

Join us August 24 at AfroPortals for a one-day exhibition presented alongside EastSide Art Alliance’s Archive (CARP) ‘Letters to Liberation: Black August’ featuring letters written by the San Quentin Six from their ‘Soledad Mothers’ special collection, art posters, pamphlets, and other publications that honor the freedom fighters of the Black Liberation Movement, abolitionists, and those who fight against systemic oppression and racism. Join us for our 2nd annual George Jackson Day, filled with a stellar lineup of speakers. George Jackson was a prominent member of the Black Panther Party and became a revolutionary figure during his time in prison. Convicted of armed robbery in 1960, he was sentenced to one year to life, spending much of his time in solitary confinement. While incarcerated, Jackson educated himself, reading extensively and becoming politically active. His writings, including "Soledad Brother: The Prison Letters of George Jackson," highlighted systemic racism and the struggles of African Americans. Jackson's radical views and advocacy for prison abolition garnered national attention. He was killed on August 21, 1971 by prison guards at San Quentin State Prison, further solidifying his legacy as a symbol of resistance against oppression.
