Black August asks us to remember the freedom fighters who came before us, to listen for the lessons they left behind, and to consider what liberation asks of us now. This month, we’re moving with the four practices at the heart of Black August: study, fast, train, fight. Join us in study over on Instagram, where we are tracing the lives, movements, and ideas of Black revolutionaries and #ArtistResponders this month. We’re practicing slowness as a form of fasting through “Revolutionary Rest,” our monthly yoga offering with Ietef Vita, making room for rest as a necessary part of our response. “Men’s Wellness Fellowship,” hosted by Christian Walker, will also create space for Black men and boys to gather, speak, listen, and tend to their wellness together. Through “Of Water & Spirit: A 2-Day Indigo Ceremony,” the final activation of the Black Women in Mourning & Joy Collective led by Ashara Ekundayo and Jasmine Narkita Wiley, we train by working with our hands and the natural environment as a means of creation and transmutation. And last but not least, we will continue to fight for artists whose practices help us heal, imagine, remember, and stay alive; for the creative work that makes new worlds possible; and for the conditions that allow that work to continue.
