January wasted no time in putting our collective foundations to the test. In this transformative year of the wood snake, we pose this question: How many times has this world been recrafted by Black Artistry? Black resistance? Black joy? Every day, but especially during this Black History Month, we celebrate the generations upon generations of Black Artists who have shaped, reflected, preserved, and split open our ways of being, seeing, loving, and fighting. AAFR Studio Assistant Marcella Sanchez is one of several queer and immigrant artists featured in “Nothing New,” a show co-curated by San Francisco artists Bushra Gill and organizer Jason Wyman. The installation features both prints and digital catalog, and will be on view from February 15th through March 16th at the new 465 Collective Space Gallery in San Francisco. The opening reception is February 15th from 2-4 pm. Read more about the show here from KQED. Founder Ashara Ekundayo’s work will also be featured in 25 Years of Art and Resistance: an exhibition of revolutionary art by Eastside Arts Alliance showing February 8th through May 3rd. For over two and a half decades visual artists, poets, dancers, printmakers, musicians, writers, performers, weavers, mosaicists, and educators have gathered at EastSide to imagine and build a home for third world artists, a place where art and culture are weapons in our liberation struggles. This is a powerful group exhibition celebrating the revolutionary artists who have been the backbone of EastSide Arts Alliance for the past 25 year. An opening reception will take place on February 16th from 1-4pm at the 2285 Gallery at Eastside.

Dr. Ietef "DJ Cavem" Vita is a Grammy-nominated eco-hip hop rapper, educator and vegan chef. He's performed at the White House and has been featured in Oprah Magazine and on the Rachael Ray Show. Sudan: A Black History Cultural Event| Saturday, February 15th 1-4PM in Oakland, CA
AAFR is a proud partner to Eastside Arts Alliance in this community program, which will feature expert presentations on the basic history of Sudan and a breakdown of the current crisis by Dr. Obeid of Sudanese American Physicians. The program, MC’ed by radio host Hana Baba, will also feature performances by the MCShabbal Sudanese Dance group, a Sudanese Arts and crafts exhibit table, and light Sudanese food. LEARN MORE |
