As we arrive at the spring equinox, we welcome a new season of renewal, reflection, and forward movement. This turning of the year invites us to tend to what is emerging while staying rooted in the memory work that grounds us. During Black History Month, we moved with deep intentionality, honoring the archives, lineages, and living histories that shape our collective practice. This stewardship of memory is active, embodied, and ever-evolving, reminding us that what we carry forward matters. Last month, we gathered at the Black Panther Party Museum for We (re)MEMBER Us — a guided, multi-channel vocal and rhythmic ceremony co-hosted with the Black Women in Mourning & Joy Collective. Led by sonic healing guides 8088 (Tossie Long and Miles Lassi) and stewarded by curator Ashara Ekundayo, the evening invited us to witness and transmute grief shaped by state-sanctioned violence, displacement, and death. In AAFR spirit, the space held mourning and joy in the same hand. As we step fully into this season, we carry that sound and spirit with us, recommitting to our mission of creating spaces where art responds first and imagination leads the way forward.
