Tonight, we gather to celebrate the opening of EXCAVATING URANUS, A PSALM FOR NYOTA UHURA, a new exhibition curated by Ashara Ekundayo at the San Francisco Arts Commission Main Gallery. Inspired by African cosmologies, Dr. Rasheedah Phillips’ thinking on Black temporalities, and the enduring cultural imagination of Star Trek’s Nyota Uhura, the exhibition brings together the work of Sydney Cain, Ayana V. Jackson, Courtney Desiree Morris, and Bryant Terry, asking us to reconsider time as something we inhabit, shape, and carry with us. Last night, Ashara Ekundayo, Courtney Desiree Morris, Ayana V. Jackson, and Sydney Cain gathered at the San Francisco Public Library for the panel discussion BOTH SPACE AND TIME, A BLACK FEMINIST CONTINUUM to share their reflections on the exhibition’s themes and thowBlack women have long expanded our understandings of time, space, memory, and knowledge.
