Join us this #BlackAugust for the final social practice activation from the Black Women in Mourning & Joy Collective after 9 years.
Of Water & Spirit is a two-day indigo dyeing ceremony for Black and Indigenous Women & Femmes of Color, led by artists Ashara Ekundayo (@blublakwomyn) and Jasmine Narkita Wiley (@jasminenarkita).
We’re coming full circle, returning to the former location of the Ashara Ekundayo Gallery (now Mighty Mighty Studio), where this social practice investigation into witnessing grief and joy through ritual, and collective artistic care first began.
Our “Of Water & Spirit” indigo ceremony will explore the elemental relationships between water, fire, and air through indigo dyed textiles using whole-cloth dyeing, clay resist, and shibori-inspired tie techniques.
✨ Saturday & Sunday, August 22–23 (Attendance is required for both days) ✨ Limited to 15 participants ✨ Sliding scale: $50–$300 (partial scholarships available upon request) ✨ ADA accessible ✨ Please bring your lunch, a water bottle, and a snack to share.
This is an invite-only ceremony specifically for Black & Indigenous women and femmes of color. Send us a DM if you’d like to request an invitation.
